Paterno Loses His Battle with Cancer
State
College, PA -January 23, 2012- Former Penn State football coach lost his battle
with lung cancer today, at age 85. A
statement by a representative of the Mount Nittany Medical Center confirmed
Paterno died from “metastatic small cell carcinoma of the lung”. Paterno’s death was caused by metastatic
which indicates his lung cancer began to spread to other parts of his body. He died yesterday at 9:23a.m.
During
Paterno’s 46 season tenure at Penn State, he was deemed the most legendary head
coach in the history of college football. Under his direction the Penn State
Nittany Lions won 409 games, 37 bowl games with five undefeated seasons and two
national championships. Over 250 players
coached by Paterno went on to play professional football for the NFL.
Yesterday Paterno’s family requested police officers block the
street where Paterno’s ranch was located.
The family did not want any public gatherings outside of their house to
allow the family some time to grieve privately.
Paterno’s
reputation became tarnished after his long time defense coordinator Jerry
Sandusky was charged with several counts of sexual abuse. Paterno
and several university officials failed to notify police authorities after a
graduate assistant at the time reported that he witnessed Jerry Sandusky anally
rape a young boy in a locker room on the campus of Penn State.
